Export
Assessment
An export assessment will consist of a number of
components. The complexity and duration of each component will vary with the
current size of the business, the mix of export transactions to total sales, the
product(s) involved, as well as a company's future plans and expectations.
Additionally, a company's past history may play a part in the assessment
process. Generally, the export assessment will include the following areas:
Basic Export Assessment:
 |
Company Profile Questionnaire:
A company profile review allows for a general understanding of your
company. Familiarity with size, location(s) and products will provide
insight into targeted areas of review and enables tailoring the
assessment to your company's needs.
|
|
 |
Opening Conference:
Once the Company Profile Questionnaire has been completed and
reviewed, an opening conference is scheduled. Attendees should include
those persons directly responsible for the export function, those
persons responsible for day-to-day export activities, and senior
management. Objectives and goals of the assessment will be defined and
an outline of the assessment plan will be provided.
|
|
 |
Interviews:
Key personnel involved with exports will be interviewed. This may
include contracts, order entry, marketing, engineering, purchasing,
shipping and/or traffic. Interviews permit assessment of the basic job
functionality, knowledge of the processes and procedures, knowledge of
export rules, and assessment of work flows within the export process.
|
|
 |
Policies and Procedures:
All policies and procedures, written or oral, will be reviewed
relative to the requirements of the regulations.
|
|
 |
Sample Audit: An audit
of exports, including shipments (tangible and intangible) and deemed
exports will be conducted. The audit conducted generally will be a
sample of total transactions. The percentage audited will be discussed
at the opening conference and recommendations will be based upon the
company profile information. The sample size will be as agreed. Should
there be a particular area of concern, a larger sample size or 100%
audit can be conducted.
|
|
 |
Closing Conference:
A closing conference will be held to provide management with a
preliminary report of findings and a summary assessment.
|
|
 |
Report of Findings:
A written report will conclude the Basic Export Assessment. This will
include all areas covered, an assessment comparing current company
posture as it relates to the recommended Export Management System
guidelines as published by the Bureau of Industry and Security (for
products subject to the Export Administration Regulations), and Areas
Identified for Improvement. Products are subject to the jurisdiction
of other agencies will be reviewed under the appropriate regulations
governing those products.
